Mild toothpaste, strong oral health
What should a toothpaste be made of? What is actually in toothpastes? Is it all necessary and is it even healthy? We asked ourselves these very questions when we decided to add a logical extension to our range of interdental brushes and toothbrushes: a toothpaste. This toothpaste was to be just like our other products: pleasant – and, above all, with a genuine benefit without being harmful. Many toothpastes on the market not only cause tooth abrasion and irritate the mouth – but can also result in mouth ulcers. Our research and development team came up with the perfect solution: CURAPROX Enzycal toothpastes.
Mild is now truly strong: cleans without causing harm and strengthens with enzymes.
Everything that might possibly be harmful has been eliminated. Instead, Enzycal toothpastes support the protective function of the saliva and contain no aggressive substances. The aggressive foaming agent, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, SLS, is found in most toothpastes on the market, however in Enzycal SLS has been replaced by a neutral one. We have also reduced essential oils such as menthol to a minimum and with Enzycal Zero we’ve even dispensed with them altogether.. Even the RDA is low. Instead of harmful substances, Enzycal toothpastes contain the lactoperoxidase system with three enzymes that are already present in saliva – this miracle fluid in oral hygiene that can even repair dental enamel. The saliva with its protective and repair functions is further boosted by the lactoperoxidase system – which also prevents mouth dryness. Enzycal toothpastes ensure healthy teeth, gums and mouth and taste just as mild as ever – making it actually so mild that it even helps combat mouth ulcers.
The oral mucosa hates SLS
Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) attacks the cells of the mouth. This leads to irritation and injuries proven to favour the formation of painful soreness and even mouth ulcers. SLS is nevertheless used as a foaming agent in almost all toothpastes.
How harmful is SLS to health?
There is a risk that SLS can penetrate the body through the mouth. Whether SLS is harmful to health is still a cause for discussion but has not yet been proven. What makes it nevertheless surprising is that something used in household detergents and in industry for cleaning oil-stained floors is found in almost all toothpastes.
Enzycal is SLS-free, which means significantly fewer ulcers. No controversial substances that might penetrate the body and cause harm. To put it briefly: Enzycal toothpaste guarantees natural, long-lasting dental care.
Ideal for sonic toothbrushes
With no SLS, Enzycal does not foam as much as other toothpastes. Initially, this may be off-putting but it is easy to get used to. There is another benefit: the reduction in foam enhances the hydrodynamic effect of a sonic toothbrush such as the Curaprox Hydrosonic.
The lactoperoxidase system boosts natural saliva protection
The enzymes in Enzycal toothpaste with their lactoperoxidase system boost saliva protection in a natural way: these enzymes are already present in saliva. Their task is to stabilise and substantially strengthen saliva’s antibacterial and remineralising functions.
Saliva is very important for oral health. Thanks to its enzymes and minerals, saliva protects teeth, gums, tongue and the oral mucosa from plaque and bacteria. Saliva thus neutralises the pH in the oral cavity, combats harmful bacteria (and even viruses and fungal infections) and helps prevent mouth infections.
Enzymes and minerals such as fluoride ensure that teeth are protected against caries and gums against inflammation and are thus protected against periodontitis as a result.
How do these enzymes work?
The enzyme amyloglucosidase breaks down glucans (e.g. starches in the plaque matrix). It also boosts the effect of the enzyme lactoperoxidase in the saliva. As a reaction, hypothiocyanite ions are formed from thiocyanate ions and hydrogen peroxide and these have superb bacteriostatic properties. Thanks to the three enzymes in Enzycal toothpastes, this lactoperoxidase system is additionally supported and bacterial growth is naturally restricted.
Enzyme 1= Amyloglucosidase: Changes polyglucans (plaque matrix) into glucose.
Enzyme 2 = Glucoseoxidase: Changes glucose in competition with the plaque bacteria into gluconate, thereby reducing the spread of bacteria.
Enzyme 3 = Lactoperoxidase with thiocyanate: the H2O2 from the glucose conversion reacts with thiocyanate to form hypothiocyanate, a naturally occurring antibacterial substance in saliva.
With sodium fluoride
Fluoride strengthens the enamel, making it resistant to acids. In the process, fluoride even remineralises decalcified enamel. Fluoride restricts the growth of harmful plaque bacteria, thus preventing caries.
Sodium fluoride is the simplest fluoride compound of all. This simplicity has an important benefit: it means that sodium fluoride ions are quickly and easily available to the tooth enamel.
Another reason for sodium fluoride
In contrast to sodium fluoride, the alternative – amine fluoride – creates a slightly acidic oral environment and this can, in rare cases, cause additional irritation of the oral mucosa.
In addition, amine fluoride is created by the hydrofluoridation of amines derived from animal fats and we felt that naturally occurring sodium fluoride held greater appeal.
Toothpaste without fluoride?
Yes, Enzycal is also available as Enzycal Zero, i.e. without any fluoride at all. This toothpaste is suitable for teeth-cleaning “professionals” or for people who prefer no fluoride. Since it also does not contain any mint oils, it is perfect for use during homeopathic treatment.
All Enzycal toothpastes are less abrasive. With an RDA value of 30, they clean extremely gently. RDA 60 cleans slightly more strongly but still within safe limits. Toothpastes with an RDA of 90 and above are best avoided.
Pleasantly mild taste
Standard toothpastes have a strong flavour – often so strong that your sense of taste is affected. Excessively strong essential flavour additives can even lead to irritations of the oral mucosa and in turn sometimes cause mouth ulcers.
Enzycal toothpastes contain considerably fewer essential oils than standard toothpastes. Only enough to stay fresh-tasting without affecting taste.
Enzycal Zero tastes quite different. It is absolutely free of mint oils and thus definitely individual in flavour. However, this is what makes Enzycal Zero particularly interesting if not indispensable to homeopathy patients: the lack of mint oils means that Enzycal Zero will not affect homeopathic treatment.
Essential substances can harm the oral mucosa. The mild taste of Enzycal toothpastes is thus an expression of their strength.
