What comes out when you squeeze the tube
It’s easy enough to buy a tube of toothpaste – you just have to find one that tastes good. But is that actually true? Here’s what matters about your toothpaste.
There are many ingredients that should not be found in toothpaste, including:
- SLS (sodium lauryl sulphate; it irritates and actually attacks the cells of the oral mucosa, dries out the mouth and creates ideal conditions for ulcers)
- Triclosan (an antibiotic that builds up resistance in the body and can even be carcinogenic in humans)
- Microplastics (accumulates in bodies of water, in animals and probably in humans too; the effects of this are still unknown)
On the other hand, toothpaste should contain fluoride to protect against tooth decay – the science is very clear on this one. And that’s essentially it: fluoride is the basis for your toothpaste.
Then you can add other ingredients depending on whether you want to remineralise your teeth, e.g. to close dentine tubules, ward off inflammation or (gently) make your teeth whiter:
- The enzymatic system, which naturally boosts your oral health.
- Hydroxyapatite to remineralise teeth and close microlesions and any dentine tubules that are open, e.g. on sensitive tooth root surfaces.
- Activated carbon and/or glucose oxidase as gentle tooth whitening systems.
- CITROX®, a natural antiseptic extracted from bitter orange, which inhibits inflammation.
- Herbal extracts that look after the gums, the gum line and the oral mucosa, and which inhibit inflammation.
- Provitamin B5, which stimulates the production of new epithelial cells, which in turn keep the mucous membranes moist.
- Xylitol, or birch sugar, which protects against tooth decay and strengthens tooth enamel.
- Flavour, either very subtle or completely different: bold, surprising.
- One or two tricks; one for a cool, clean taste; the other to make teeth appear whiter; both are totally harmless.
The RDA should also be low to prevent tooth enamel from eroding.
Check out a full overview below (and if you’d prefer to skip this information, click here to go straight to the toothpastes):
Tooth decay has decreased significantly since the introduction of fluoride to toothpaste.
Fluoride remineralises tooth enamel, hardens it and has an antibacterial effect. The science is clear: fluoride protects against tooth decay. — If you always eat healthily and clean your teeth perfectly every time, you can forgo fluoride. Eating healthily: fruit, vegetables, probiotic products, little meat, virtually no sugar, everything prepared yourself. Cleaning your teeth perfectly: this is by no means simple, but can be learned. Even dentists train to do this – in our iTOP seminars. — Enzycal Zero is the only one of our toothpastes that does not contain fluoride: it is designed for people who clean their teeth perfectly and for those undergoing homeopathic treatment.
No SLS: a foaming agent that attacks the cells of the oral mucosa.
You can tell if a toothpaste contains SLS, as your mouth becomes dry and your sense of taste changes – orange juice and espresso, for example, taste different from how you expect. If you have a dry mouth or suffer from ulcers, toothpaste that does not contain SLS is especially beneficial. — Our toothpaste products do not contain SLS. This means that they do not foam as much. While this takes some time to get used to, it has a major benefit: it is good for your oral mucosa. Sonic toothbrushes can also clean more thoroughly if they are not covered in foam. — Other names for SLS: sodium lauryl sulphate or sulfate, and sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS).
No triclosan – great.
Some manufacturers use the antibiotic triclosan as it is supposed to work well against bacteria. Despite this, doctors advise against the use of triclosan as it causes the body to build up resistance; it is also unclear whether it has a negative impact on your health. Animal testing has shown that triclosan can have a carcinogenic effect. — Our toothpaste products do not contain triclosan.
100% free from microplastics
You can find them in shower gel, peels, toothpaste and chewing gum: microplastics. These are extremely small pieces of plastic that improve the scrubbing properties of certain products. Even the idea is a bit strange. And the result: all of these tiny pieces of plastic accumulate in bodies of water, inside fish and other animals, and even in honey made by bees. It can probably be found in the human body, too. Its effects are as yet unknown. We don’t need microplastics. We’ve never used them in any of our products. The little balls found in our BE YOU. products are made of menthol – that’s fresh!
A low RDA guarantees that your tooth enamel will always be treated with care.
It’s okay for toothpaste to be a little grainy, as it helps to remove dirt. If it is too grainy, however, over the years this can erode tooth enamel. The erosive quality of a particular toothpaste is measured in RDA, which is short for radioactive dentine abrasion. We recommend using toothpaste products whose RDA is as low as possible. – Our Enzycal products have an RDA of 30 to 60, our BE YOU. range has an RDA of 50 and our Black Is White and White Is Black products have a score of 76, which is unbelievably low for whitening toothpastes.
The enzymatic system reinforces the natural protective functions in your saliva.
This system consists of three enzymes. They are: amyloglucosidase, glucose oxidase and lactoperoxidase. All enzymes in this system are also found in our saliva. The great thing about them is that they produce substances that are harmful to the bacteria in the mouth. In other words, they fight bacteria, fungi and viruses. They inhibit the formation of plaque and tartar, break down sugar, and support the natural protective functions in the saliva. — All of our Enzycal toothpastes contain this enzymatic system, as do our Black Is White and White Is Black whitening toothpastes.
Glucose oxidase is enzymatic and gentle and even helps make teeth appear whiter.
Brighter, whiter teeth isn’t something that comes from applying sandpaper or a bleaching agent. Natural glucose oxidase can help: this enzyme converts sugars into oxygen, which helps to counteract discolouration and stains. And it does even more than that: it stimulates lactoperoxidase, keeps oral flora healthy, helps the body to produce saliva and has an antibacterial effect. Even bees use glucose oxidase to help protect their honey from germs. — Glucose oxidase is an ingredient in our BE YOU. toothpaste products and in our Black Is White chewing gum.
Also whitening: activated carbon is jet black but cleans like a charm.
Activated carbon simply soaks up discolourations and stains – this principle is known as adsorption. It works like a vacuum cleaner, or perhaps like a sponge that you put in a puddle of water. Our Black Is White and White Is Black toothpastes act in exactly the same way to spirit away discolourations and stains. And they do it without eroding your teeth enamel and without using any bleaching agents. Activated carbon is also an ingredient in our Black Is White chewing gum.
A top trick: a blue filter.
This is an ingredient that makes your teeth look whiter. This blue filter works as a lustre pigment with a purely physical effect – not a chemical one – and is totally harmless. Prestige Sparkling Blue filters out yellow light. That’s all. — An ingredient in Black Is White and White Is Black.
Another top trick: staying cool.
Starphere is an amazing additive consisting of cellulose and starch and is also totally harmless. It has a cooling effect and makes brushing your teeth a refreshing experience. — An ingredient in Black Is White and White Is Black.
Snow makes mountains appear white.
For teeth, hydroxyapatite does the same thing. And it also happens to occur naturally in the mountains. It is a mineral that makes up 95% of tooth enamel, and is extremely hard – harder than steel. Hydroxyapatite stabilises tooth enamel by replacing dislodged pieces of enamel, which enables it to close dentine tubules that are open, too. It polishes the tooth enamel to a new shine, and works to remove stains and discolouration. When used regularly, it forms a protective layer around the tooth enamel and keeps it even. New particles that cause discolouration can no longer stick to the surface of the teeth, leaving them looking great. — Hydroxyapatite is found in our BE YOU., Black Is White and White Is Black toothpastes, and in our Black Is White chewing gum.
This is bad news for bacteria, fungi and viruses.
CITROX®, a product forged by nature: this bitter orange extract has an antiseptic, antifungal and antiviral effect and helps to inhibit inflammation. The extract contains natural bioflavonoids, which our bodies have always been familiar with. CITROX® is non-toxic and keeps oral flora healthy. CITROX® has been tried and tested over the course of several decades, e.g. as a food preservative. — CITROX® is found in our BE YOU. toothpaste range and in our Perio Plus+ antiseptic mouthwashes.
Inhibits inflammation: natural solutions sourced from the world of herbs.
Yes, they do soothe and regenerate the mucous membranes and gums, inhibit inflammations, and help to heal wounds after an operation or treatment. And they do it naturally: coneflower, devil’s claw and Asiatic pennywort. — These herbal extracts can be found in our BE YOU. toothpastes.
We are pro vitamins.
Panthenol – or provitamin B5 – is especially beneficial for oral health, as it boosts the production of new epithelial cells. It also inhibits inflammation, facilitates the healing process for wounds and keeps the mucous membranes moist. — Panthenol is an ingredient in our BE YOU. range of toothpastes.
To finish off, here’s something that’s as sweet as sugar.
Some of our toothpastes contain sugar. But don’t worry: it’s birch sugar, which is also known as xylitol. It protects your teeth rather than harming them, because birch sugar inhibits the proliferation of caries bacteria. It also strengthens tooth enamel and actually tastes like sugar. – Xylitol is found in our BE YOU., Black Is White and White Is Black ranges and – you’ve guessed it – our Black Is White chewing gum.
